We simply add the stainless-steel cables or tracks under your structure’s beams, so the canopy integrates seamlessly. This is an ideal choice if you already have a pergola or other frame – the canopy will enhance it with retractable shade while preserving your existing design.

The installation is straightforward and does not require major modifications to your pergola beyond anchoring the wire system.

Freestanding Frame

If you don’t have a suitable structure, Goodwin-Cole can build a custom freestanding frame (or an attached framework) to support the slide-wire canopy. This essentially creates a new pergola or open-air frame tailored to your outdoor space. The frame can be anchored to your house or built as an independent unit with posts, depending on your needs. A freestanding slide-wire canopy gives you flexibility in placement – it can sit over a patio, poolside deck, or any outdoor area you want to shade. Our frames are engineered for strength and stability, but with a slim profile so they won’t feel bulky or block your view.

Operation

Most slide-wire canopies are traditionally operated by hand. The panels glide along the wire tracks with minimal effort – you can pull the fabric panels open or closed using a pull wand, handle, or simply by grasping the edge of the lead panel.

Thanks to the canopy’s clever design, the fabric stacks into neat folds at one end when retracted, and it can be secured so it stays put in windy conditions.

Manual operation offers simplicity and reliability: there are no motors or power required, and adjusting your shade is as easy as sliding a curtain. This option tends to be very budget-friendly and low-maintenance, while still giving you full control over sunlight and airflow.

For the ultimate convenience, we also offer motorized slide-wire canopy systems. A small yet powerful motor is integrated into the canopy system to extend or retract the fabric panels at the push of a button. The motorized system allows for effortless adjustments – you can deploy or retract your canopy in seconds, even covering multiple canopy sections simultaneously if your design has more than one panel set.

Motorized canopies often come with a remote control or wall switch, and can even be integrated with smart home systems if desired. This is especially useful for larger canopies or for homeowners who want to automate their outdoor comfort.

Fabric Options

Goodwin-Cole uses premium outdoor fabrics for all slide-wire canopies, ensuring your investment looks great and performs well over time. You can choose from hundreds of fabric colors and patterns to complement your home’s style – whether you want a bold, eye-catching color or a subtle neutral tone, we have options to match any design aesthetic. Our canopy fabrics are typically solution-dyed acrylics or other high-performance textiles which are UV-resistant and fade-resistant, so the colors will stay vibrant even under harsh sun exposure.

These fabrics are designed for outdoor use: they resist mold, mildew, and are easy to clean, meaning your canopy will continue to look fresh with minimal upkeep. You can also select fabric types based on your needs – for example, a mesh or textilene fabric that allows some light and air through for a cooler dappled shade, or a solid acrylic canvas that blocks the sun more completely for maximum cooling. Many of our fabrics are water-repellent or even waterproof, which means your slide-wire canopy can provide light rain protection as well. If rain protection is a priority, we can slightly pitch the canopy and use a suitable fabric so that water runs off.
